Future for Nature Award 2010

Close to 400 people watched as the winners received their Awards, from the hands of Saba Douglas-Hamilton (Save the Elephants and chair of FFN selection committee), Angela Cropper (UNEP and FFN selection committee) and Willem Ferwerda (IUCN NL), for their amazing nature conservation feats.
The winners all presented their work to the audience, before receiving the Awards.
Alberto was very serious:
Jean more happy,
And Els was solemn.
The three winners presented amazing stories of perserverence, working against the odds, and in dangerous circumstances. They convince the local population to go against tradition, to work in areas of expertise they have never worked in, and to again convince others of the importance of conserving nature.
As a result of their work, the populations of Manatee, Tenkile tree kangaroo and Barbary Macaque are no longer declining, or even, against all odds, growing in number.
During the day we heard inspiring speeches from Saba Douglas Hamilton and Angela Cropper, as well as a touching speech from Willem Ferwerda.
The award Event was enlivened by a Papua New Guinean dance group, Mambesak.

The winners just received their Awards. From left to right there are: Mr. Mohammad Farhadinia, Dr. Inza Kone, Sir David Attenborough (Guest of Honour), Mrs. Maggie Muurmans and Mr. Herman Rijksen (Chair FFN Foundation).
In the morning, a symposium regarding species conservation was held. A substantive group of interested and critical people attended. Most of them were students, but also the winners and other interested people were present.
Various visitors of the Award Event are enjoying a leisurely lunch.
After lunch, the anxious waiting was rewarded! The names of the three winners were revealed. Below Mr. Mohammad Farhadinia, Dr. Inza Kone and Sir David Attenborough.
But not before they all gave a presentation about their remarkable work. Below, you can see Maggie Muurmans presenting her work.
Inza Kone (picture below) and Mohammad Farhadinia paved the way with their inspirational speeches.
The audience was very enthusiastic about the potent examples the winners gave, of how to make a difference.
Sir David Attenborough concluded the afternoon with a motivating and enthralling speech.
"You all know that in the end it’s that one individual, that one individual that has passion, that one individual that has fire in the belly, that one individual that is determined that something should be done".... "And so I applaud very much Future for Nature's policy in supporting those people and in picking them out." (Sir David Attenborough at the FFN Award event 2009).
It was exciting to see both younger and older generations making a stance for the protection of species!
At the end of the day, an informal reception was held, where everyone had a chance to meet friends, colleagues and the winners, and to expand their network.
Music (by Zou Diarra) and drinks enlivened the event.
